Dear Baby Skurdal Sovereign,
Five days ago your Grandma Danielle passed away in an electrical fire at her home in Sedro-Woolley. I want you to know how much she was looking forward to being a grandma. She had been asking for a grandchild for all of my adult life. When I married your father, Grandma Danielle started telling her friends she would finally get a grandbaby soon. Little did we know, she was right.
The day we called Grandma Danielle to tell her the news, was the day we found out about you. You were only 4 weeks in the making in my tummy. Your dad and I called her together- I only got a few words out to my mom before your dad blurted it out "Jacquee's PREGNANT!". Grandma Danielle was so so excited.
From that point forward every time Grandma would call me she would ask about you. "How's my baby (she was talking about me). And how's your baby?". She liked to call you her whoops baby's whoops baby. See, Grandma and Grandpa Swindle got pregnant with me on accident- so my whole life I was called my dad's whoops baby. And because you were also unplanned (but a wonderful surprise!), my mom thought it was funny to say you were my whoops baby too. It's always been a slightly annoying but endearing nickname.
Grandma Danielle was able to go to my second ultra sound, when your were 11 weeks. I am so thankful that she got to go. As your second cousin Christina pointed out, it was like she got to meet you. She was so in awe during the ultra sound. She just starred at the screen and watched you bounce and move. She said "He's just like his dad, a surfer!". She was convinced you were a boy (as I type this, I still don't know your sex). It gives me some peace to know that she got to see you in some way before she passed...
The last time I saw your Grandma Danielle was two days before her passing. We went to her house and had dinner with her and Grandpa Chet. Grandma also gave me a stuffed teddy bear to give you- It is wearing a little shirt that says "Someone in sedro-woolley loves you". Hopefully you will treasure that. Grandma and I also looked at baby clothes that some friends had given to me already. And we looked at the baby registry. Your grandma also gave me a book to give to you - a book of words. She talked about the things she wanted to buy for you to help out me and your dad. Basically, we talked about you a lot. Because, as she said in an voicemail she left me exactly one month before she passed, "I love that baby".
It breaks my heart that you will never meet your grandma. But I know that you will be loved even more (if its possible to love someone THAT much) by everyone who knew who how much Grandma Danielle loved you. We will all do our best to share our memories about her with you and make sure she lives in your heart as you did hers.

Officially in the last week of my 1st trimester!
Today is the first day of the last week of my first trimester. The baby has finished its major developments. Only 27 more weeks to go! (ha... "only")
With the first trimester behind us soon, I am hoping that the nausea, tiredness and food aversions start to go away. Over the past couple weeks all three have gotten better. I want to be able to look at chicken and turkey again without getting queazy!
The 2nd trimester we will be doing the last blood test in a round of tests to tell us if the baby might have a disability. We're also finding out the sex of the baby (on Cinco de Mayo!).
More updates soon... and hopefully Caleb will post something on here soon. I'm sure folks are interested to hear his perspective on all this!

Mommy update
Hi Family & Friends,
Jacquee here! I'm almost done with my first trimester (2 days to go!). Crazy how the time has passed. I always hoped if I got pregnant I wouldn't find out until later in the pregnancy. Like in the 2nd trimester. I'm so impatient- it's hard for me to wait! But of course, the universe has a cruel sense of humor. We found out we were pregnant when I was only 4 weeks along.
On Thursday morning I went to an OB appointment. During this appointment we went over the results of an ultrasound I did 2 weeks before. The ultrasound was to check to make sure the baby is forming properly- and to check for signs of physical or mental handicaps. The ultrasound results came back normal and good. They also did a blood test- but we have to do one more blood test (in 4 weeks) before we can have a better idea of if the baby may have downs syndrome. My OB is hopeful and says based on the development of the baby- its likely the baby doesn't have downs syndrome. It doesn't run in my family or anything, we thought we'd just do the non-invasive test so that if it turned out the baby might have downs syndrome, we could prepare. Because as some of you know, there are different things to prepare for when having a baby with a mental or physical disability. If the blood test in 4 weeks shows the possibility of Downs syndrome, there is another test we can do to get a definite result. It's where they get a big needle and stick it in my belly and then stick it in the uterus (and then stick in the baby, I think) and get chromosomes from the baby. Caleb and I decided that if the blood test in 4 weeks shows a possibility of Downs Syndrome - then that's all that we need. We're not so concerned about if it has a disability that we'd do such an invasive second test.
After going over the test results- we moved on to checking the heart beat of the baby. This was the first time I heard the baby's heart beat! If I remember correctly the heart rate was 159 beats per minute. Caleb was a little disappointed he wasn't there to hear it. He'll be the OB appointment on Cinco De Mayo though to find out the sex of the baby! yay!
And last night Caleb and I read a pamphlet about C-sections. I'm having the baby via c-section due to my hip condition. I discovered that I will have to have a catheter (a tube they stick in the urethra to drain your bladder!). That was just about the most terrifying part about the information I read. I have a very very traumatic memory from a childhood hip operation about a catheter. I had to have one put in every summer when I'd have surgery- but one particular time I remember it being excruciatingly painful. Oi! We'll see how that goes.... maybe if I tell them I am scared of the catheter, they'll give me the pain drugs before they do the catheter!!
Well- that's probably enough of an update. Kind of a downer update this time. Sorry!

Boy or a Girl? What we are hoping for.
Hi Family & Friends,
Jacquee here! Last night Caleb and I got a big box of baby boys clothing from our friend Nika. Caleb and I also had a stash of baby girl clothes from our friend Marisa that we hadn't gone through yet. So we decided to sit down and go through it all.
Caleb and I have decided we'd like to dress our baby more gender neutrally. AKA- If we have a girl, her wardrobe will not purely consist of pink stuff and floral designs. So we kept this in mind whilst going through the lot of baby clothes.
We made our way through the boy's clothing. There was one shirt in particular that Caleb loved (and wished it was in his size)- A hooded shirt with two surfers on a wave. Totally Caleb. Other than that- he didn't get too excited about the boy's clothing. I was having fun though, because I'm hoping for a boy. It was fun to imagine having baby Leif and putting him in some of the cute polo's we picked out. He'd match his uncle Matt really well!
When we moved on to the baby girls clothing... that's when Caleb started to realize that contrary to his prior beliefs- he does in fact have a preference when it comes to the sex of the baby. He picked out every little dress there was- and excitedly said "I hope we have a baby girl- Freyja would look so cute in this!".
Although we have differing hopes for the sex of the baby- it is really fun to see Caleb get excited about the baby. And to form hopes and dreams about the baby. Realistically we'd both be happy with whatever we got. And honestly, I think if we had a girl, Caleb would have a heart attack as soon as she hit puberty and started to act out (There was a jean mini skirt in the baby girl clothes and I was teasing him about keeping it and he was like "NO WAY"). :-)
I think the funnest part of this pregnancy so far- has been to see Caleb warm up to the idea of being a father. Although the ultra sounds and hearing the heart beat of the baby are amazing as well!!
On Cinco De Mayo we will officially find out the sex of the baby. We haven't fully decided if we will announce the sex. We'll see!! But I think we'll definitely be having a Cinco De Mayo party to celebrate either way!

6 weeks and 4 days: Our first Ultra Sound picture
Jacquee here! I'll keep this brief. This is the first ultra sound we did at 6 weeks and 4 days. The baby was the size of a peanut but already had a heart beat! The baby flickered with each beat of its heart- it was quite awe inspiring.
Caleb joined me at this ultra sound. We had originally thought we were 8 weeks along when we got this first ultra sound- so we expected to see more of the baby. But when they measured it, we found out that it was only 6 weeks old. That meant waiting even longer to tell everyone about the baby!! And I am so terrible at keeping things like this secret!
The baby is no longer a peanut sized one but now 2" long and 11 weeks old. What a huge difference in such a short time!

11 weeks and 1 day ultra sound picture
Jacquee Here! This is an ultra sound of baby Skurdal Sovereign at 11 weeks and 1 day. At this ultra sound there was a lot of excitement! This was the first ultra sound where the baby looked like a baby. You can see its nose and mouth, hands and feet.
My mom came with me to this ultra sound. She seemed to really enjoy herself. She kept calling the baby "he/him" (however, we have no idea if its a boy or girl yet!). And she said the baby is a surfer (the baby was bouncing around a lot!)
When we started the ultra sound the baby was still and I was in awe of how much its changed and grown. And then.... it kicked! I can't feel its movement yet but I SAW this tiny 2" baby of mine move! It was mind blowing. The baby moved a lot more after that point- kicking and sucking its thumb, bouncing up and eventually turning its back to the ultra sound picture- At which point we decided the baby was done and finished the ultra sound.
In a few weeks we should be able to find out the sex of the baby- how exciting!

Jacquee here! Caleb and I came up with names for Baby Skurdal Sovereign the first week we found out we were pregnant. The names are a mixture of names I had already planned and names Caleb and I chose together.
If we have a baby girl, her name will be: Freyja Imogen Alexus
If we have a baby boy, his name will be: Leif Sufjan Kieran
In my family, we all have two middle names. It's been something that I've always considered normal and thought I would pass on if I had children.
The first names we chose are both from Caleb's heritage (Norwegian). Freyja is a Norse Godess. Leif is a Norwegian name.
Now, all we need to do is meet the baby and see if any nicknames arise. :-)

Hi Family and Friends,
This blog is to keep everyone updated on the newest information about Baby Skurdal Sovereign. We'll post pictures and how things are coming along.
Today we are 11 weeks and 1 day along. However, today when we had an ultra sound, the baby measured 11 weeks and 6 days old. Fat baby or further along than we thought?
We found out we were pregnant on January 12th 2011. We were only 4 weeks along. Though this was an unplanned pregnancy, we're happy to welcome this wee one into our lives.
We are due September 16th 2011. We will be delivering via c-section due to Jacquee's hip condition. If the baby comes when planned, then it will be sharing its birthday with its Aunt Anna Skurdal.
